SEO A/B testing lets you compare two versions of a page’s SEO elements (title, description, or content) to see which one performs better in Google search results. This recipe explains how to use SEO Forge PRO’s A/B testing feature.
Step 1: Choose What to Test
Not everything is worth A/B testing. Focus on changes that can directly impact click-through rate from search results.
| Good Things to Test | Why |
|---|---|
| SEO title variations | Titles have the biggest impact on click-through rate |
| Meta description variations | Descriptions affect whether searchers click your result |
| H1 heading text | Can affect both rankings and user engagement |
| Bad Things to Test | Why |
|---|---|
| Small content changes | Too many variables; results will not be statistically significant |
| Schema markup differences | Rich results are shown at Google’s discretion; hard to isolate impact |
| Pages with very low traffic | Not enough data to reach statistical significance |
- Choose a page with consistent search traffic — ideally at least 100 impressions per week in Google Search Console
- Decide on exactly one element to change — do not change the title and description at the same time
Step 2: Set Up the Test
- Ensure Google Search Console is connected in SEO Forge > Settings > Search Console
- Go to SEO Forge > A/B Tests
- Click New Test
- Select the post or page you want to test
- Choose the element to test (Title, Description, or H1)
- Enter Variant A — this is typically the current version
- Enter Variant B — your new hypothesis
- Set the test duration — minimum 14 days is recommended, 30 days is ideal for statistical confidence
- Click Start Test
Step 3: How the Test Works
- SEO Forge alternates between Variant A and Variant B on a weekly rotation
- During Week 1, Google sees Variant A; during Week 2, Google sees Variant B; and so on
- The plugin tracks impressions, clicks, average position, and CTR for each variant using Search Console data
- Do not make any other SEO changes to the page during the test — this would introduce variables that invalidate the results
Step 4: Monitor the Test
- Go to SEO Forge > A/B Tests to check progress at any time
- You will see:
– Days remaining
– Impressions and clicks for each variant so far
– Preliminary CTR comparison
- Do not end the test early based on preliminary results — small sample sizes can be misleading
- Wait for the full test duration to complete
Step 5: Analyze Results
- When the test completes, SEO Forge shows a results summary:
| Metric | Variant A | Variant B | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions | 1,240 | 1,185 | A |
| Clicks | 87 | 112 | B |
| CTR | 7.0% | 9.5% | B |
| Avg. Position | 4.2 | 4.1 | B |
- Look at CTR as the primary metric — this is most directly affected by title and description changes
- Check that the difference is marked as “statistically significant” — if not, the sample size was too small to draw conclusions
- Consider the confidence level — 95% or higher is reliable
Step 6: Apply and Iterate
- If a clear winner emerges, click Apply Winner to make that variant permanent
- If results are inconclusive, either extend the test or try a different variation
- Document your findings for future reference — over time, you will learn what types of titles and descriptions perform best for your audience
- Move on to test another page using the same methodology
- Do not run more than 2-3 tests simultaneously to keep your data clean
