WordPress Keyword Rank Tracking with Search Console

SEO Forge connects directly to Google Search Console and pulls keyword ranking data into your WordPress admin every day. See which keywords your pages rank for, how their positions change over time, which posts are driving clicks, and which ones are bleeding traffic. All without leaving WordPress.

What rank tracking data SEO Forge pulls

Per-keyword data

  • Positionaverage ranking position in Google search results
  • Clicksnumber of clicks from Google to your page
  • Impressionsnumber of times your page appeared in search results
  • CTRclick-through rate (clicks ÷ impressions)
  • Changedaily delta for each of the above

Per-post data

  • Top 10 keywords the post ranks for
  • Total clicks to the post
  • Total impressions
  • Average position across all keywords
  • 28-day trend chart

Site-wide data

  • Total clicks and impressions
  • Average position across all ranking keywords
  • Keywords gained and lost
  • Top rising and falling keywords
  • Trends over 7 / 30 / 90 days

How the integration works

OAuth 2.0 connection

Connect your Google Search Console property to SEO Forge with a one-click OAuth flow. No API keys to paste, no Google Cloud Console setup. Click Connect Search Console, authorize access to the specific GSC property, done.

Tokens are stored encrypted in our managed Forge API backend — not in your WordPress database — so credentials stay secure even if your WordPress site is compromised.

Daily sync

Once connected, SEO Forge syncs ranking data daily via WP Cron. Each sync pulls:

  • Yesterday’s ranking data
  • Any adjustments to historical data Google applies (GSC data is finalized ~3 days after the fact)
  • A fresh snapshot of top keywords per post

Sync runs in the background. No UI freeze, no PHP timeout.

Historical data

SEO Forge stores ranking data for the last 16 months (GSC’s historical window). This gives you year-over-year comparisons, seasonality analysis, and long-term trends — all inside the WordPress admin.

The rank tracking dashboard

Overview panel

The dashboard shows:

  • Total clicks (with % change vs previous period)
  • Total impressions (with % change)
  • Average position (with position change)
  • Top keywords gaining (top 10 rising)
  • Top keywords losing (top 10 falling)
  • Best-performing pages (by clicks)

Per-keyword view

Click any keyword to see:

  • Historical position chart
  • Historical clicks chart
  • Which page ranks for it
  • Related queries from GSC

Per-post view

Every post’s SEO Forge meta box shows:

  • The top 10 keywords the post ranks for
  • Position for each
  • Recent change
  • Click-through performance

Period comparison

Compare any two time periods: last 28 days vs previous 28 days, this month vs last month, this year vs last year. See which keywords improved and which decayed.

Integration with Content Decay Detection

This is where SEO Forge’s rank tracking really earns its keep. The Content Decay Detection feature runs on top of the same GSC data. It compares the last 28 days to the previous 28 days for every ranking post and alerts you when traffic drops beyond a threshold.

Workflow:

  1. A post’s clicks drop 35% over 28 days
  2. SEO Forge sends you an email alert
  3. You click through to the post, see the ranking data that triggered the alert
  4. You run AI Content Optimizer to identify what to fix
  5. You apply the suggested fixes
  6. SEO Forge tracks whether the post recovers in the next 28 days

Without rank tracking integrated into the same plugin as the optimizer, this workflow doesn’t exist. You’d have to manually check GSC, open the post, use a separate tool to analyze, and track results yourself.

Which GSC properties are supported

  • Domain properties (recommended) — covers all subdomains and http/https
  • URL prefix propertiescovers a specific URL prefix
  • Multiple properties per siteconnect the primary domain property plus any additional subdomain properties you want to track

Privacy and data

GSC data pulled by SEO Forge is stored in your WordPress database. Our Forge API backend only holds the OAuth tokens needed to fetch the data from Google — not the ranking data itself.

If you disconnect the GSC integration, tokens are revoked and historical data remains in your WordPress database until you choose to delete it.

vs standalone rank tracking tools

Tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, and Moz offer rank tracking starting at $99–$199/month per seat. SEO Forge’s rank tracking is included in the $39/year license — because it’s built on top of the free Google Search Console API that you already have access to.

The trade-off: GSC data is limited to queries that actually generated impressions for your site. You don’t get ranking data for keywords you don’t already rank for. If you need broader keyword discovery, external tools are still valuable. For tracking rankings on keywords you already rank for, SEO Forge is dramatically cheaper and more integrated.
