AI Internal Linking for WordPress — Auto Link Suggestions

Internal linking is one of the highest-leverage on-page SEO tactics — and one of the most tedious. Every post you publish should link to 3–5 other relevant posts on your site, and every related post should link back. For a mature site with hundreds of posts, keeping this structure current is a full-time job.

SEO Forge’s AI Internal Linking does it automatically. When you publish or update a post, the AI scans your site’s content, finds semantically relevant posts, inserts <a> tags at appropriate anchor text, and adds reciprocal backlinks on the target posts.

Why internal linking matters

For users

Internal links help visitors discover related content on your site, which increases pageviews per session and reduces bounce rate.

For SEO

Google uses internal links to understand:

  • Site hierarchywhich pages are most important (measured by how many internal links point to them)
  • Topic clusterswhich posts are conceptually related
  • Crawl prioritypages with more internal links get re-crawled more often
  • Link equity distributionhigh-authority pages pass link equity through internal links to lower-authority ones

A well-linked internal structure can improve rankings across the entire site without any new content or external backlinks. It’s free SEO leverage.

Maintaining a good internal linking structure by hand is exhausting:

  • You have to remember which posts are related to the one you’re writing
  • You have to find the right anchor text
  • You have to go back and add reciprocal links in the target posts
  • You have to update links when posts are renamed or deleted
  • You have to avoid over-linking (which dilutes link equity)

Most site owners give up after 50 posts. Their internal linking stays frozen in time while the site keeps growing.

How AI Internal Linking works

On post publish

When you publish a new post in SEO Forge, the AI runs automatically:

  1. Scans the new post’s content — extracts the main topics, keywords, and entities
  2. Searches your site’s database — finds published posts with semantic overlap
  3. Scores each candidate — based on relevance, authority, and whether linking makes sense
  4. Selects 3–5 targets — the most relevant posts that don’t already have excessive inbound links
  5. Picks anchor text — identifies the right phrase in the new post to link from
  6. Inserts the links — adds <a> tags with the chosen anchor text
  7. Adds backlinks — updates the target posts to link back to the new one

All of this happens in the background after you click Publish. You get a notification when it’s done with a summary of links added.

On post update

Same process runs when you update an existing post. AI re-analyzes and suggests new links based on the updated content, while preserving any manual links you added.

Manual review mode

If you’d rather approve links before they’re inserted, turn on Review mode in settings. Suggested links appear as a list in the meta box with accept/reject controls.

How the AI picks targets

Semantic relevance (not just keyword match)

The AI uses vector embeddings to find posts that are actually conceptually related — not just posts that share keywords. A post about “how to choose a hosting provider” will link to a post about “WordPress performance optimization” even if the two don’t share exact keywords, because they’re related concepts in the reader’s journey.

Authority distribution

The AI considers which pages on your site currently have the most internal inbound links and biases toward pages that have fewer. This distributes link equity more evenly and strengthens weaker pages.

Over-linking prevention

If a candidate page already has 50 inbound internal links, the AI skips it in favor of candidates with fewer — the marginal SEO benefit of the 51st link is much smaller than the first link to an unlinked page.

Anchor diversity

The AI varies anchor text across multiple links pointing to the same destination to avoid “over-optimized anchor text” patterns that Google flags as manipulative.

Custom rules

In settings, configure:

Minimum relevance score

Don’t insert links below a similarity threshold (default 0.6 on a 0–1 scale). Higher thresholds = fewer but more relevant links.

Maximum links per post

Cap the number of AI-inserted internal links per post (default 5). Keeps posts from being link-stuffed.

Excluded categories

Don’t link to posts in specific categories (e.g., “news” or “press releases” might not make good internal link targets for evergreen content).

Required post types

Only link to posts in specific post types (e.g., blog posts and tutorials, not WooCommerce products).

Cornerstone content

Mark specific posts as “cornerstone” — the AI will prefer these as link destinations when relevance is comparable.

Reciprocal backlinks

When the AI adds a link from Post A to Post B, it can optionally add a link from Post B back to Post A. This ensures every internal link is bidirectional, which is ideal for topic cluster structure.

Reciprocal linking is on by default. Turn it off in settings if you want one-way links only.

Running on the existing archive

Already have 500 posts with no internal linking? Run AI Internal Linking in bulk from the dashboard. SEO Forge processes every published post in the background and builds a complete internal linking structure over 24–48 hours.

Bulk run respects your settings (max links per post, minimum relevance score, excluded categories) and uses AI credits proportionally to content volume.

AI credit usage

  • Single post processing: ~2 credits
  • Bulk run on 100 posts: ~200 credits

Your 100-credit activation bonus covers ~50 single posts — enough to start linking up a small site. For a full archive bulk pass, most users add a 1,000-credit pack ($9, ~500 posts) or a 5,000-credit pack ($35, ~2,500 posts). Packs never expire, so you can run the initial structure once and keep the remainder for per-post processing as new content goes live.
